How to Import Character Cards on iPhone
You've collected characters you love — from creator communities, friends, or your own past projects. Here's how to bring them onto your iPhone and give them a native home in PersonaChat.
What character cards are
A character card is a portable definition of an AI character: name, personality, backstory, scenario, and example dialogue bundled into a shareable file. Communities across the AI roleplay world trade thousands of them, which means the character you want may already exist, written by someone who obsessed over getting the voice right.
The catch: most tools for using them are desktop-first web apps. If you want those characters in your pocket, in a native iOS interface, with your chats stored privately, that's what importing into PersonaChat is for.
Importing into PersonaChat
Coming from Chub specifically? There's a dedicated walkthrough for importing Chub AI characters; the steps below cover cards from any source.
- Get the character file onto your iPhone. Download it in Safari (it lands in Files → Downloads), save it from a chat app, or AirDrop it from your Mac.
- Open PersonaChat's Workshop tab. The Workshop manages every character you own, created and imported alike.
- Tap Import and select the character file.
- Review the character. The card's personality, backstory, and scenario come in as editable fields, so you can sharpen or rewrite anything before the first chat.
- Start the scene. Imported characters work everywhere built-ins do, including group chats.
After the import
Treat the card as a first draft. Cards written for other platforms sometimes lean on formatting quirks of those platforms. If a character feels slightly off, open them in the Workshop and tighten the personality or example dialogue; the same rules as creating from scratch apply.
Give them a scene worth entering. A great character with a flat opening scenario still stalls. Rewrite the scenario field so the first message hands you a role and a choice.
Mix them into an ensemble. Imported characters next to your own creations in a group scene is where a collection becomes a cast.
