Memory & Lore: Character Memory You Can Trust and Control
Memory & Lore combines automatically maintained Living Memory with a user-owned Lorebook. Characters can recall relationships, preferences, boundaries, promises, discoveries, and story facts without dragging every old topic into every reply.

How it works
PersonaChat keeps a rolling recap for the broad plot. Living Memory adds sparse, automatically curated facts and open threads. Lorebook adds durable facts that you deliberately create, edit, or save from an automatic memory.
Both systems use selective recall: the newest user message must make an entry relevant before it can be included in a reply. Recent conversation can improve ranking, but an assistant mentioning an old topic cannot reactivate it by itself.
Memories that evolve, not accumulate
Most AI memory systems only add. Living Memory also updates: a promise can be marked fulfilled, a mystery resolved, a fact corrected when the story moves past it. Your character doesn't just remember that a debt existed — they remember it was repaid, and behave accordingly.
The Memory & Lore screen keeps ownership clear. Automatic memories can be inspected, deleted, or promoted into Lorebook. Lore entries belong to you and can be added, edited, scoped to this story or all chats with the Character, and deleted whenever you choose. Pausing Living Memory does not disable Lorebook.
That's the difference between a character with a filing cabinet and a character with a past.
What characters will remember
- Relationships: who matters to whom, and how that changed
- Preferences and boundaries: what you enjoy, and what's off the table
- Promises: made, kept, or broken
- Mysteries: open questions, and the moment they're answered
- Important events: the scenes your story turns on
- Unresolved threads: the plot lines waiting to be picked back up
Durable, and still yours
Durable Living Memory records, Lorebook entries, and their embeddings live on your device; PersonaChat does not create a server-side memory or Lorebook database. Built-in replies, curation, Add-to-Lore drafting, and embeddings are processed through VenusCloud, OpenRouter, and downstream AI providers. When OpenRouter BYOK is active, supported requests go directly from the device to OpenRouter using your key and bypass VenusCloud. See the privacy policy for provider data-handling details.
Memory & Lore works alongside PersonaChat's automatic recap, which you can review and edit on every plan. See how PersonaChat compares to Character AI, Polybuzz, and the rest.
Frequently asked questions
What is Living Memory?
Memory & Lore combines the rolling story recap, automatically curated Living Memory, and user-owned Lorebook entries. Both automatic memories and Lore are recalled only when the newest user message makes them relevant.
How do the rolling recap, Living Memory, and Lorebook differ?
The rolling recap preserves the broad story. Living Memory automatically maintains selected old facts and threads, while Lorebook stores facts you deliberately create, edit, or promote from an automatic memory.
Is Memory & Lore available now?
Yes. Memory & Lore is available in the current PersonaChat app for one-to-one chats.
Where are the memories stored?
Durable Living Memory records, Lorebook entries, and their embeddings are stored on your device, not in a PersonaChat server-side memory or Lorebook database. Built-in AI processing uses VenusCloud, OpenRouter, and downstream providers. When OpenRouter BYOK is active, supported requests go directly from the device to OpenRouter using your key. See the privacy policy for details.
Why does selective recall matter?
Sending an entire conversation history to the AI on every message makes replies slower and less focused the longer a story runs. Selective recall surfaces just the memories that matter for the current scene, so characters stay sharp and consistent even hundreds of messages in.
